The moment I removed the wrapping from one of the precious SunnyHills Pineapple Cakes, I got a whiff of a nice aroma of butter. It didn’t overwhelm the nose bud which is good sign of how things would further develop.
The brick-like pineapple cake from Taiwan has a crisp crust that crumbled with bite and melted in the mouth. The pineapple filling was a well balance of taste and texture – just the right amount of sweetness with a tinge of tartness, chunky and fibrous.
Hard to stop at one though it seemed large, each piece packed with a good 200 calories would make a tasty teatime snack to curb hunger pangs before dinner. Enjoy it with tea and the knowledge that they are made from fair-trade pineapples organically grown in Taiwan.
It won’t be fair to compare these to traditional Chinese New Year pineapple tarts, but they are just the right amount of sweet, soft and satiable.
And for Muslims, the SunnyHills cakes is now Halal certified by the Taiwan Halal Integrity Development Association. This makes for a good gift for everyone, including your Ovo-Lacto vegan friends.
From $25 for a box of 10, at #03-05 Raffles Hotel Arcade.
